My sister wants me to marry her and her boyfriend. I live in MA she's in NY. How do I do this?

Do i need to become a notary, a justice of the peace, change my residency to be able to marry them in NY? She asked me to do it because we%26#039;re so close. Does anyone have any ideas on how exactly to become legal to marry a sister/friend?

She doens%26#039;t want me to marry her, she wants me to be the guy who marries her and her fiance, just to clarify.

Thanks!|||are you being serious? thats a very weird request of her to make.|||That seems like a really weird request. I%26#039;m not even sure family can legally be the person doing the ceremony.|||Find out what the laws are in the state of NY to officiate at a wedding ceremony. It would be easier if she got married by a Justice of the Peace and then asked you to say a few words. Her request is very odd.|||If you are not legally licensed to marry a couple, then you cannot just %26quot;preform%26quot; a legal wedding. She will need to either find a pastor/priest or go to the courthouse before a judge to be married.

Why would she even think it would be legal if you are not licensed to do so???|||3sum

weird one tho|||It is not that easy. You either have to become an ordained minister in that state. Or like you said a notary, or justice of the peace. Now what you could do is you can do a formal and informal marriage. They could go to the court house get a married certificate have it signed by a judge which they do all the time. Then you could perform an informal wedding where you would marry them there. They would already be legally married you would just being doing it for the family and friends so they could witness it. The fact is it is too hard to get the stuff taken care of. On top of that it cost money. People who go through that plan on doing more than once so if I where you I would just perform an informal service.|||Darrell has the right suggestions. I am sitting here laughing at all the people thinking it is strange for your sister to request that you officiate their wedding. It is actually very special and sweet that she would think so highly of you as to ask. Darrell really did have a great idea...you should take it!

How do I change my perminant residence from RI to CT?

I recently moved to CT from RI. How do I go about changing my new residency to CT? I still have a RI license... do I really need to get a CT license?|||Yes, you have to change your drivers license, your car registration, your voters registration, your mailing address --

Most places allow you up to 30 days to make the changes, some places don%26#039;t. You need to get it done either way or if you get pulled over, you%26#039;ll get a ticket for an improper license AND registration.|||yes because in different states there r diffrent laws about driving therefor u will have to go and get a new license. or u will be pulled over and u will get a ticket.

How do I find health insurance if I have been told we are uninsurable?

I am asking this question for my m-in-law. Retired early, had extensive back surgery, f-in-law has diabetes and possible heart issues. Going to be coming off of COBRA in California, and are looking for health insurance. Aren%26#039;t there health insurances like Medicaid/Care that cover hard to insure people that are in %26gt; 50yr age group?? What if they change their residency from Calif. to Texas?? Does it matter??|||50 is too young for medicare. Medicaid is for the very low income, you could certainly APPLY for medicaid, but if they have any assets, they are likely to not qualify. It doesn%26#039;t change much, the income guidelines, from state to state, HOWEVER, coverage in one state (the state of residence) ONLY covers you for services in THAT STATE. So if they CALL their residence Texas, they won%26#039;t be paid for any services in CA.

One thing to look into - if they are on SSDI, after 27 months of SSDI, they%26#039;d qualify for MEDICARE, even if they aren%26#039;t old enough otherwise.

Also, the diabetic should look into part time work, at Walmart or something. Walmart does offer group benefits to their part time employees - which is a MAJOR bonus for the older crowd.

There isn%26#039;t a group for %26quot;hard to insure%26quot; people, because as a group, you can%26#039;t get enough premium dollars from them to cover the costs, WHICH ARE EXTENSIVE. Sorry for the bad news.|||I work for a medical discount benefits company. It isn%26#039;t insurance but is very affordable. We have a great program that offers a prescription card that will cover all prescriptions for $82 a month regardless of the price (as long as they meet the income guidelines). Here%26#039;s a website to look at:

www.everybodyhasteeth.info

Like I said, it isn%26#039;t insurance but it might help. I carry it myself and it is very helpful. There are no age limits, pre-existing conditions, etc. Anyone can receive coverage and the plans are very affordable - The most being less than $60 a month and the cheapest $20 a month. IM or email me if you have any questions. Good luck!|||As long as they have credible coverage, they have rights under HIPAA. They need to apply for insurance before that credible coverage ends. They will be declined, however, they can appeal it and have coverage extended to them. I am licensed in Arizona and not familiar with California%26#039;s stae-specific rules, but in Arizona the insurers cannot increase the price more than three times the rate they would receive without the declining condition.

Underwriting guidelines are also state specific, but they should consider their options both together and individually. Diabetes and back issues may be treated differently by different companies.

Finally, I would suggest they be proactive through the application process. Since HIPAA portability policies are typically uncommissionable and not in an insurance companies best interest, they will want to be prepared to provide medical records and attending physician statements themselves.

California may also have state assistance or even insurance programs. I would contact the State%26#039;s Insurance Department to find out.|||Texas has a high risk health insurance pool. Contact a health insurance agency in Texas or The Texas Dept. of Insurance in Austin,Texas. The premiums are a little more but it%26#039;s the same coverage you would have if you were not high risk.|||take a look at our insurance place. We accept all pre existing conditions. go to http://freedombenefits.info

What do I legally need to do since I am moving from NC to NY in terms of my residency/state ID, etc?

I may be moving back in a year or two, so I%26#039;m not taking my car with me (it will stay with my sister in NC) but I would like to have an ID card or a drivers license in NY. Do I need to change my residency or anything for tax purposes? Can I get an ID or a driver%26#039;s license without changing my residency? I%26#039;m just very very very confused on how all of this works.|||Residency in one state vs another is not a big deal at all. If you plan to live and drive in NY, you should obtain a NY drivers license. If you don%26#039;t plan to drive while living there, skip it, because you can use your NC license for ID. When you file state income tax, just follow the directions to prorate it between the two states.|||do you want a ny id to feel cool ?

i was gona move from ny to nc, but bailed last minute.

anyways i dont know the answer to your question

please bring me some ciggarettes they are twice the price up here.|||Just get an ID for the state of NY and keep your DL in NC. A lot of people have double state residency.

What's the deal with residency and a drivers license in a new state?

I%26#039;m in college in Minnesota, but a legal resident of S.Dakota. I%26#039;ve noticed that when I go into bars, they won%26#039;t let me in because my ID is from SD %26amp; they have been having problems. So if I got a Minn. ID, would I need to also change my residency and license plates?

Also, if I take my SD license into a Minnesota DMV, can I just get a license right then and there? Or would I have to bring anything else with me? Do I need to show them my birth certificate or passport or anything? Or would I have to take any tests? Or how does that go?

PLEASE AND THANKS!!!|||If your a college student you may be on your parents helath isurance still. Your permanant residence must be your home address with your parents, or that insurance might be void.

A bar in a college town can%26#039;t possibly turn everyone away. Try calling the manager during the day to explain the problem.

Be careful to check the situation out with your parents health insurance before you change your address. Then if you can, just apply for a Minn drivers license and leave the license plates in MN. Applying for a SD ID is a great idea.|||I can honestly say that the government is giving you more trouble than you really need. All you need to do is be over 16.5 years old, pass a driving test (if necessary), take a vision test and get your picture taken. If this is taking a longer amount of time than you can handle, you can get a legal ID from the government and the bars should let you in.|||I don%26#039;t know if you need to bring anything with you, but you would have to change your permanent address and license plates.

If you go to the DMV%26#039;s website, or call them, they will tell you if you need to bring any papers other than your driver%26#039;s license.

I doubt you would have to retake any tests, but their website will answer that as well (or the phone call).|||Go to the dmv and tell them you want a non drivers ID. That way you can use the address you%26#039;re at right now and get an id. The card will look like a license but it will say %26#039;non drivers ID%26quot; You can show that instead of your license and you dont have to change residency.

Oh you need your ID and a birth certificate. A SS card might do too but you need originals!|||Congrats in College - so what are you doing in bars and not the library?

You may have visitor status as a college student and not have to do the registry thing for your vehicle -

but you may have to take the test for a D/L in South Dakota

AND surrender your Minn D/L to get it.

What about an ID card only from SD??

then you can just shred it when you graduate - versus -

having to reapply for a Minn D/L.

all the best

In-state residency for tuition purpose in Indiana?

Hi, I am a student who attends Purdue University in Indiana.

I have a question regarding resident classficiation. I have finished my first year of college, and I intend to go back to school to take a leave of absence for a year in order to claim in-state residency.

I am originally from North Carolina. I was considered as a out of state-er for this year, but I was wondering how I can change that.

People around me have been telling me different things, such as I just need to take a break from school for a year, and live in an apartment for a year. Others suggested me that I should do all the things above, and get a car, obtain Indiana driver%26#039;s license, and get a full time job in Indiana for a year.

I really do not know any procedures to change my residency classification. If anyone knows or has done this, please answer this question for me.

Thank you.

Have a wondeful day.|||This is according to the Indiana government:

U.S. citizens or permanent residents over age 21 are eligible for resident student status after they have been physically present in Indiana for twelve consecutive months prior to the first day of classes.

Students under age 21 are eligible for resident student status if their parents or legal guardians reside in Indiana for 12 months.

Other general criteria may apply.

----

However, in order to be considered in-state you%26#039;re going to have to have a job to afford to live there (as well as to show proof that you are a contributing member of Indianan society) and a valid Indiana ID or license to show you have given up your other state. You don%26#039;t need a car.

I have dual Italian and Australian passports. How do I become an Italian resident?

I was born in Australia to Italian parents, I have an Italian passport therefore I am an Italian citizen. I am currently in Italy and plan to live here permanently. I am allowed to live here on my EU passport but I want to become a resident so I can get a EHIC card for health care. How do i change my residency?|||You will have to have a street address in Italy, either by renting or buying a house or apartment somewhere, and showing up at the city office (ufficio anagrafe) of that town or city to register your residence.

You will be officially considered a resident only when the local police will make an unannounced call at your address and ascertain that you are indeed living there, otherwise your application for resident status could be rejected.

Bear in mind that the bigger and more populated your chosen place of residence in Italy will be, the longer it will take for the registration process to complete.

Once you will have a %26quot;certificato di residenza%26quot; in your name, the next step to obtain an EHIC cardwill be to get a %26quot;codice fiscale%26quot; from the local tax office (called %26quot;Agenzia delle Entrate%26quot;), and then bring it to the Health Insurance Office at the local ASL (Azienda Sanitaria Locale) to apply for the card.|||You move to Italy - you don%26#039;t need to do anything to become a resident except moving there and having a physical address in Italy. Then you apply for your EHIC card using your passport as your identification|||Reside legally in Italy physically.

Navy spouse...changing state residency?

My husband (active duty) and I want to change our state of residency from WI to TX. My WI drivers license is set to expire next month. Can I change my state of residency to TX and get a TX drivers license all at my local DOT? If not, how do I go about this. Also, he%26#039;s in school now until the end of next month, what does he have to do on his end?|||You know you can just renew online or call up WI, all states have separate rules when it comes to military and their families. If you change your residency, you have to change everything, you may be required to retest for both your licenses, any cars will have to be re-registered, your insurance will have to be changed, you%26#039;ll need to have it re-inspected to meet TX guidelines, all your taxes paperwork will need to be filled out again and at the end of the year you%26#039;ll both have to pay state taxes to TX instead of him having no state taxes to WI, DEERS will have to change your home of residency now and again if you leave TX. Some of that stuff will end up costing you. If your license is the only reason you want to change I would think about it long and hard, there are ways around all that stuff, that%26#039;s not even the whole list, I have a friend who basically screwed herself by doing that. I almost did it too, now we%26#039;re leaving here in a month. Call WI DOT and ask what you have to do to renew, I%26#039;m sure it%26#039;ll be cheaper and easier. You said he%26#039;s in school, if he gets orders are you going to change again? Think about it|||yes. when he returns, yes.|||You can change your state of residency to the current state that you live in. with that you can change your drivers license too. Just go to the local DMV. Your husband doesn%26#039;t have to do anything you can do it by yourself|||I will assume you are currently living in Texas. If you are, just go to your local DOT and get a DL, and register to vote. That%26#039;s it! Hubby will have to do the same, and then have it changed on his military pay as well. BUT, you have to be living in the state at the time to be able to do this. If you aren%26#039;t living there it%26#039;s a no go.

ETA: When you move with your hubby you are generally required to get a new DL for wherever you are stationed. There are some states that are exceptions, but changing DL is the norm. Also, your state of residence is going to change with every move. His will not as he is there on military orders. But yours will.|||first,do noting to his army check as one has told you.the army and him will work on it.no on the local dot.you can renew then there and then you will haft to go to tx and take the test there so get in there and get them renewed be for you leave.were ever he is ,if he is in tx all ready he can do it there.if not his license can be done that way as well.you can also go to [dmv ]and they can tell you what for sore.

Typical signs of breaking up, but it can't be?

My girlfriend lives in Pennsylvania she%26#039;s 28, I live in California im 22. Recently she had to change residencies so here internet is down and thats the way we communicate, so its been about 7 weeks since we%26#039;ve last talked, she should be getting setup soon if not before christmas.

Here%26#039;s the thing, I called her cell phone (for the very first time) because I wanted to talk to her in the middle of this long absence. Here%26#039;s what happened: *rings* she picks up* I say hi * she says hi* a second later the line goes dead. I called back like 3 times in the hour not knowing what happened. Normal people would look at this like its her way of saying %26quot;MOVE ON!%26quot; i know i know. But we were reallly attached to each other just before she had to move, it doenst make sense for her to just cut me off, besides we talked about how we%26#039;d make it work and I%26#039;d wait for her to come back, we were together for about 6 months before she had to move, I love this girl soo much, she%26#039;s not a size 0, and she has a kid from a different guy, but she has this innocence about her that i fell in love with, we fell in love hard over that 6 months, we talked about a future together, she deffinitely wanted me more, wanted us more, and I wanted the same thing, we were dedicated to each other.

SO here%26#039;s my question; that phone call is bugging me, my brain can%26#039;t stop thinking %26quot;what if she just doesnt want to talk to me?%26quot; it crushes me to think this, so i try not to, is it possible that there%26#039;s an explanation for what happened besides a breakup? the dead line and the no reponse to my calls after that? I%26#039;m really worried about the worst here, I can%26#039;t lose her, she means so much to me.|||It sounds like you really care about this person and you guys had something strong before she moved away. I really dont want to be harsh or blunt because I know this is very important to you and you are feeling very upset about this. I feel that she might have broken up with you, in a very cowardly manner, if i might add. Why do I say this? well lets say that the roles were reversed and you were the one causing the strain in the relationship by moving away. Go thru the steps what would you do? you would make sure you made up the time spent away from each other in other ways, ei: communication. If your internet was down but she still had hers.... you might use your call phone, go to the library and use the internet at least once a week, shoot her a quick email from work or from your buddies PC, regular good ol%26#039; US mail ... My point is that when you wan to stay close and in contact with someone..... you find a way, right?

If you are searching for an explanation long enough, you will find it and if you love her it will make sense but the reality is that you called and attempted to establish that contact, the line went dead ( lets consider the possibilities, the phone died. the phone fell in the sink full of water as she answered etc. a person that wanted to call you back would of found the way)

I%26#039;m sorry that this happend to you and that you were left without answers, sometime other people dont have the courage to say what they need to say but you have to remeber, you didnt do anything wrong. She made a decision on her own and its unfortunate that after all you had she chose to end it in such a manner.

Keep your head up. Dont obsess about something you have no control over: OTHERS

How to prove residency when you live in a relatives home?

Notice that most u.s states require proof of residency to change your out of state drivers license over to your new state.what does someone do who is living with a relative and does not have any utility bills in their name do to prove residency? Can they bring the relative they are living with to the dmv along with the relatives utility bills and have the relative confirm they are residing with them?|||Depending on age, if you are over 18 put yourself on Electoral register. It will then be registered with a credit ageny. You can also go down to a bank with your parents if you are underage and open an account.|||If you are paying rent, bring a copy of the check and a receipt signed by the relative.

If you have received any mail...not junk, but business mail.

If you are enrolled in an educational system, show a copy of your registration form with the new address.

If you have applied for a library card using the new address, show a copy of the application and the card, if it has been issued.

You really need to call BMV and find out what they will accept. There might be information available on their website.|||Easy! Go to your phone company and order a phone, hard wired? Or switch your cell phone address or Your Computor service bill, and your good to go. But no you can%26#039;t bring your relative.Do you realy think that THOSE people at the DMV will actually accept that? I know you don%26#039;t believe It either. Just get yourself a utility. You should have your own phone anyway|||no they won%26#039;t except your relative coming in and vouching for you, i would open a checking account with the new address or have someone mail you something|||I never had to show proof. In California, you have to get your license in something like 10-20 days, and all I ever did was the application for new license and have to take the test.

Your signature is an affidavit of proof.

Active duty Navy. Need help changing my residency for tax purposes!?

I%26#039;ve been told by many many many people, including tax professionals to change my state of residency from GA, to Fla. Well, I%26#039;m stationed in VA, and have never lived in Fla. Yet, they say, everyone does it. Tell me how!!!|||People just change it on their form but if you get caught you can get in trouble. I live in Va also and my hubby used my parents address in texas so he doesn%26#039;t pay state taxes...if you know someone in a state that has no taxes ask to use their address and have an unimportant bill or something you pay online sent there and you can claim residency.|||First, thank you for your service. Second, go to your personnel officer and ask him/her how to change your state of residence. Third, if you ever see an old Chelsea Ships%26#039; clock, please let me know?|||just pay the state tax. go to PSD and make sure VA is your place of residency. DO NOT LISTEN TO THOSE OTHER PEOPLE!!!! if you are collecting BAH, changing your residency could lower it by massive amounts. i should know. take my advice. stay on the up and up.|||actually, the Navy no longer allows us to change our HOR.. they stopped it a couple of years ago. Does Georgia charge income tax on monies earned outside of Georgia? if you own a home in Virginia, you may be able to file using that address instead.

How do I change my state of residency from Alabama to Connecticut?

Do I just have to change my plates and license?|||actually to change your residency to CT you have to live in the state for one year,i think.just to get plates it can be your home of domicial and need a valid address.|||No! You actually have to move there too.|||I guess you would have to move to Connecticut, and then go through the proper channels to get everything changed over. Like the License bureau %26amp; etc.

Help - Long Distance Relationship?

I am in love with someone who lives in the United States, and I am in Canada. We have been on and off due to lack of communication and being apart for so long. But recently we have made the decision to pursue long term goals of being together. This would mean getting married in order for me to change residency, and him supporting me until I can work with a permit (1 - 3 years). The only problem is that he has a child with another woman, and that woman is still heavily in the picture and still wants to establish a family with him. He has not yet informed her of his decision to pursue things with me.

I need honest opinions, does it seem worth it to take the chance of uprooting and moving far away for him? And do you think him not being able to tell the other woman yet is a sign of hesitancy and uncertainty, or is it just because he is afraid and doesn%26#039;t know how he will break it to her?

Please be kind in your honesty. I don%26#039;t need to hear that I make bad choices. I%26#039;d just like some opinions about the situation.|||There is no point in moving until he sorts this out with the mother of his child. He will have to do it eventually - so he may as well do it now. He needs to understand that since you sacrificing so much for him, the least he can do is to provide you with some kind of warrant of a stable life. When you move your life in the States will be hard enough without his ex being in the picture.

Also, before you move make sure you have got something to come back to if things go wrong (like, if you have a flat, don%26#039;t sell it - let it out to a friend and have some funds in your saving account). This will make you feel more secure.

He seems quite committed for having agreed to support you until you get work permit. I think it is worth trying, who knows, you might just find a happy new life in a new place!

But definitely make sure he has got his previous relationship sorted before you move. This is a must!

Good luck!

|||having a long distance relationship is hard...you have to keep ur communication open in order to continue the spark...

you have to think whats good, especially whats the right thing to do...just dont be selfish in making decision...sometimes you have to sacrifice for what%26#039;s right...|||I would speak to your soon to be husband and say that you need his support. If he dosen%26#039;t do anything about it maybe you deserve better.|||If your man wants to be with you truly enough to marry you and live the rest of your lives together, he should be absolutely fine, if not excited, telling whoever will listen about his plans to spend his life with you. Do you really want to commit to a life-long situation right now if he%26#039;s not willing to be open with the other woman in his life about his intentions with you? If he hasn%26#039;t mended things with this other woman, he doesn%26#039;t deserve your willingness to make the most important decision of your life with him. This man will only be ready to give you his everything once he stops letting the other woman believe there is the slightest chance that they will be together someday.

I%26#039;d say, for the time being, you owe it to yourself to not make such a life-altering change at this immediate time. His certainty of wanting to get married should only be proven to you by his willingness to cut such a relationship off with another woman.

Hope I helped, and absolute best of luck to you :)|||Sorry, but NO. I was in an LDR with the distance only being LA/San Francisco and it was impossible. The baby mama drama only complicates the situation. I%26#039;ll bet you%26#039;re quite young and can find someone better suited to you that lives closer. American guys are pretty flaky and self-serving. I%26#039;m not sure what your guys are like, but I%26#039;d like to think that you can find a decent man without all of the entanglements closer to home. |||i am not sure but i think that if he has a child just let him live his life and go and find someone that u like or if u have a best friend that is a boy and doesn%26#039;t have a girlfriend go with him

hope it helps tried my best!!!!|||He needs to completely settle his situation with his ex before you even consider continuing a relationship with him let alone moving all the way over there!

Don%26#039;t get married for the wrong reasons either. It all sounds rather messy and risky. If you move there you%26#039;ll be without a job and dependent and you%26#039;d have left everything behind.

Are you willing to take that risk?

Think properly, trust your instincts and do what%26#039;s best for YOU.|||As to your heart contents, you can%26#039;t keep yourself from the one you love. Although, he maybe dealing with issues about his family this shouldn%26#039;t be a problem. What you can do is help him in his difficult situation by comfort words. Tell him no matter what, you will always be there. You want him to be apart of your life and this is what it has to come to. I don%26#039;t think you want to jump into this too soon. Marriage is a big step and a commitment. If your partner can%26#039;t communicate with you now on these terms or be on complete honest grounds, this isn%26#039;t the best time for that. As you mentioned he hasn%26#039;t informed the mother of his child of his intentions. It maybe possible he is still unsure of the plans you two are making together. There is also and indication that he is hiding the relationship you two have from her because she wants to establish a family with him. Your best bet is to just talk with him. If he answers your questions uncertained, don%26#039;t take the chance and cause yourself emotional pain. I suggest, if the guy you love isn%26#039;t making any effort to change/resolve his past problems he can%26#039;t have a future.

"How" should I move to MA from NC?

In a nutshell: I%26#039;ve lived in Charlotte, NC since I was 3, and when I graduate college in spring %26#039;10, I want to move up to Boston- or the surrounding area. I have many good close friends in the region and love New England in general. I feel home there.

But I%26#039;m wondering, what do I need to DO to do this? My friend said it%26#039;s easier done than said, but how do I do things like finding an apt, or finding work [I%26#039;ll have a Meteorology degree]?

Is there any bureaucratic legal stuff I%26#039;d need to take care of [I don%26#039;t want to move there and find out that I needed to %26quot;officially%26quot; change residency status or something tediously-bureaucratic like that], or is it really as easy as going there, moving into an apartment, and interviewing for work and such?|||We just move from WI to SC, and basically we bought a 45%26quot; trailer (cheaper than uhaul and now we can sell it), packed it and moved. We traveled with 3 small children, no jobs, no house to come to, no relatives here. Just wanted to get out of the cold. I left behind 3 grown children and a new first grandchild. We stayed at a hotel that offered weekly rates (you can also get monthly). We found a four bedroom house in 3 weeks of being here. We%26#039;ve been here 4 months and now my boys are moving down here. I would suggest padding yourself with some cash for the move and if you are driving the move, take your time and see the sights along the way it is a good way to let go and look forward to new beginings (we took 2 weeks, but we had kids to travel with). It is easier done than said, I know I talked about making this move for 6 1/2 years, and I am so proud I finally let go of my inhibitions. If you know you want something just get it done, everything else will fall into place, as it is meant to be. You will be just fine. Also we have not reregistered our vehicles, or changed our license, if your are close to expired in NC renew before you leave, but really that is just a way to hold on to what you are used to.

How long does it take to get a work permit in the US?

I%26#039;m in california and recently filed my residency change of status and work permit last july 1st. I went through the finger printing already last week. I just want to know if anybody out there knows how long it takes to get my work permit? thanks!|||About three to four months all told. Visit the link below, select your service center and see what date they are processing now.|||$5000.00, go back to your state, apply and wait 5 years.

What determines state residency?

I was born and raised in Texas, I%26#039;m going to school in Utah (been going for 5 years), and I have no clue where my first job will be, but I%26#039;ll be leaving Utah within a year. How do I know what state I%26#039;m technically a resident of? Is it just based on where I currently live? What if I get a job where I move every couple years? Does my residency change that often, too?|||During college, if you%26#039;re living in a dorm, you generally use your parents%26#039; address as your permanent address. After that, you%26#039;ll be considered a resident of whatever state you are living in at any given moment.

Do I need to change my residency so I don't get charged income tax from 2 states?

I have a New York state driver%26#039;s license and while I was in the Marine Corps I was charged income tax by NY even while in Japan. Now Im living in Oregon and I%26#039;m wondering if I will be charged income tax from both NY and OR. How do I avoid this? Should I go get an Oregon driver%26#039;s license? Is there a form to fill out or something? Anyone who has an answer thank you.|||Lady was close but no cigar. If you are in the military you can chose your state of residence (as long as you meet the requirements for that state). It is not restricted to the state you resided in when you enlisted.

In your case, both Oregon and New York have an exclusion of all or part of active duty military pay, calculate which state would benefit you most. Most bases offer free help for filing taxes. Of course this will only help you in the future after you change your state of residency with the Marines...if you change it mid year you will have to file a return in both states.

Further, if you are ever in a situation to establish residency in a state that either has no income tax or one that doesn%26#039;t tax military pay...it would be worth while. Once you establish the residency you can keep it as long as you remain in the military regardless of where you are stationed.

Unless, you have a second job you will only have to file a NY tax return and not an Oregon return.

Hope this helps.|||If you are in the military, you have to do federal taxes from whatever state you lived in when you joined. And you do NOT do taxes for where you are stationed.

So, if you are stationed in Oregon, but your home was NY, you ONLY do NY taxes... however, if you are out of the military now and you moved to Oregon on your own, you ONLY do Oregon taxes, and NOT NY. This is regardless of where you get your license, actually. If you%26#039;re in the military, your home state is considered to be where you lived before you joined, unless you get a second job at your current location. As soon as you get out, your home state is wherever you move to.

I%26#039;m a military wife, and for years now, I%26#039;ve been stuck doing my husband%26#039;s taxes because he%26#039;s been deployed for tax season, so I know this very well.|||Active duty military retain their domicile regardless of where they are stationed. While you CAN change your domicile to the state where you are stationed, anything that happens prior to the change stands. Therefore while you could change your domicile from NY to OR today, it will NOT be retroactive! For 2008 you were a NY resident and MUST pay NY State income taxes.

In order to change your domicile, you must take positive actions to do so. Getting a drivers license in the new state is only one way to prove your change of domicile. The BEST documentation of change of domicile is registering to vote. Some GIs will get a local drivers license in the state where they are stationed simply because it%26#039;s easier to deal with that way. You have a local ID which makes it easier to write checks, you get less hassle from cops sometimes, etc. so merely getting a local drivers license isn%26#039;t always enough. Registering to vote is prima facie evidence of your intent to change your domicile. Once you%26#039;ve done that, you have to update your domicile on your military pay record. Your local finance office handles that.

Once you separate from the service, things change. If you were in the service when you arrived in OR and then separated in OR and remained in OR, you became an OR resident on your ETS. From that date forward, NY lost the right to tax your wages and OR gained the right. In this case, you would file part-year returns in both states, reporting only the wages earned while domiciled in the respective states. In this situation, not getting a local license doesn%26#039;t change the fact that your domicile changed since you are no longer covered by the Soldiers %26amp; Sailors Civil Relief Act once you separate.

On important caution on switching domicile while on active duty. If you separate and then immediately return to your former home state, they may treat the change in domicile as an attempt to evade state taxes. MA, VA, and CA are notorious for this. I%26#039;ve seen all three states look back at income over a 20 year military career and slam the former service member with a tax bill for the entire 20 years since there is no SOL for tax evasion. For this reason, it%26#039;s CRITICAL that you do not immediately return to your former home state upon ETS! The longer the gap in time between your ETS and your return to your former home state the better. I%26#039;ve seen folks successfully argue their case with as little as 6 months but a year or more would be better.

How do I change my state residency to California?

As of right now I%26#039;m a resident of Wisconsin, but since I lived in California for a year and a half and plan on returning to California after the Army, how do I go about doing this? What are the requirements?|||Residency and %26quot;home of record%26quot; are different things. To establish residency in a state you normally just have to get your license plates, drivers license and register to vote and the state would consider you a resident.

To change your home of record, the military is going to want to see you establish something permanent in your new home. Speak with your personnel office for exact details.

How do you change state of residency without losing FAFSA money from your original state?

I want to make the state where I attend school my permanent residence.....how will that affect my student aid from FAFSA?|||The Fafsa application is a federal application, meaning the federal aid you recieve (Pell grants, Work Study, and student and Parent loans) are good at any school in the US who is eligible to recieve federal funds. Some folks get addtional State grants from the state they are residents of. If you attend an out of state college, you will not be eligible for a state grant. Also, it is very difficult to %26quot;change%26quot; your original state of residence. (Simply living in the state to attend college won%26#039;t cut it). So be prepaired to not get any state grants if you already get them and be prepaired to pay out of state tuition at your out-of-state school for your entire college career there.

How do I change my residency so that I can attend another school out of my state?

I live in Nevada, and go to UNLV. I just want to go to a school out of state without paying for too much. My dad has an apartment in LA that he uses for work. I was just wondering if I can use this address to obtain my residency in California. I have heard conflicting times of when I get my residency as well. Can anyone clear it up? Finally, would my idea work if I still live in Vegas while I get my residency in California?|||You have to reside in CA for a year before being considered a resident and are eligible for the lower tuition for public schools. Some schools have %26quot;neighbor state%26quot; programs though which would allow your tuition rate to be somewhere between what in-state and out-of-state students pay. Check with whatever schools you are considering to find out if they have anything like that.

Hi, Im currently resident of Ks. I am wanting to change my residency to ca for school. how do i do this?

%26quot;To be considered a California resident for purposes of fees, an out-of-state student must have lived in California for more than one year preceding the residence determination date, relinquish residence in other states, show an intent to establish residency in California and demonstrate financial independence. Unmarried undergraduates from other states qualify as financially independent if they were not claimed by their parents or others as dependents for tax purposes for two preceding tax years and if their annual income is sufficient to meet their needs. All married students and unmarried graduate and professional students from other states qualify as financially independent if their parents or others have not claimed them as dependents for tax purposes for the preceding year.

Other out-of-state students who qualify as financially independent include veterans of the U.S. armed services, students with legal dependents other than a spouse, students with both parents deceased, students who are wards of the court, and students who are at least 24 years of age by December 31 of the year they seek to be classified as residents.%26quot;

Does your driver's license allow you to drive anywhere in your country?

I%26#039;m from Canada and you need to exchange your driver%26#039;s license from one province to another when changing residency. The stupid part is that you need to show 2 pieces of id for the original driver%26#039;s license and then again when you update for a different province. If you don%26#039;t have a second piece of id like a valid passport or citizenship card, you can%26#039;t get a driver%26#039;s license, or insure a car!

How stupid is that?!|||Here in the US, you have to change it from state to state if you are changing residency, and we have the same 2 ID issue, but we also have Social Security cards, so to get a new ID, all I would have to do is show them my old DL, and my SS card, and I would be done. Now states also vary as to whether or not you need to take a test or not when switching residency.|||A drivers license in the united states is valid in any state|||Yes you can drive anywhere in the country as long as you are visiting. If you are looking to move to another state, you would need to transfer your license to that state by going to the local DPS office.|||if you visit within the country i think you can, but if you actually move somewhere, then you have to have the license for that state.|||In the US you can drive anywhere in the country with your drivers license. BUT if you change states you are required to get a new license in the new state of residency. They also require two forms of ID, a passport, greencard, or birth certificate in addition to your drivers license from your previous state.|||We can drive anywhere in the States with one State%26#039;s license. If we move permanently we need to get a new one. If you live in 2 states ( like some people live in florida all winter ), you pick one as the permanent residence, usually where you spend the most time.|||ID requirements are being tightened up all over. It%26#039;s a new world since 9/11. You have to be able to prove who you are. If you had id to get your original licence you should be able to produce id if you move to another province or state. The person who answered a US licence is good in all states, misread the question. A US or Canadian licence is good for visitors and temporary residents in all provinces or states, but you need a new licence if you move to another province or state.|||Not much better here. Every state has its own Department of Motor vehicles with it%26#039;s own rules. When you relocate to another state you must obtain a replacement license and vehicle tags.|||Your Province%26#039;s are like our States. We can drive anywhere in the U.S. but if we move from one state to another, we have to change as well. Yup, two forms of I.D. can be a pain, however, we are allowed to use our Social Security card as a form of I.D or a birth certificate. The stricter guidelines pretty much stem from 9-11. Many of the Canadian regulations are the same as here.|||You have to do the same thing in the US when you move from state to state. Each states motor vehicle laws will have variances to them, hence the need to change.

But, you can drive anywhere in the US with it.

What do I have to do to change my residency from PA to NJ?

I just started a job in NJ and am living in NJ. I will be required to earn a NJ Commercial Driver%26#039;s License eventually. For now, it was %26quot;highly recommended%26quot; by the HR people to change my official residency to NJ. I assume this will require changing my Drivers License, but I am unsure of what else I may have to do. I do know how to change the drivers license, but I could use some guidance on any of the other things I may need to change. Any help is appreciated.|||Just your drivers license, and your car license plate is it. You may also wish to register to vote, which can be done with a simple form at the drivers license office but this is only optional if you wish to vote. When you go into the license plate office, make sure you have your checkbook ready- they dont take credit cards. Youll need to pay your car tax, pay for title (make sure you have your registration), and also you will need to change your insurance over to NJ before you go. It should all be listed on the NJ DMV website under moving to NJ or something of that nature.

How can I change my Penn State residency status if I've already been accepted as out of state?

OK, here%26#039;s the deal: I live in Florida with both of my parents. While almost every other member of my family lives in Pennsylvania. Also, I am currently a high school senior (18yrs old) and have been accepted to Penn State University Park campus starting Fall of 2009.

Now that I%26#039;ve established that, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can become a Pennsylvania resident for tuition purposes?

I mean is their any possible way I could use my relatives address/Pennsylvania resident status to establish residency? I%26#039;ve read through Penn State%26#039;s residency guidelines: http://www.bursar.psu.edu/faq.cfm?sc=Res鈥?/a>

but I%26#039;m still not sure if having my Aunt list me as a dependent on her taxes and getting a PA drivers license and registering to vote in PA(using her address) would qualify me to petition for a change of residency status at Penn State? And if it does what should I say in my petition letter?

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions of what I should do? Any suggestions of how I could get financial aid from Penn State?

And please don%26#039;t tell me to just give it up and pay out of state tuition b/c even with the scholarship money I%26#039;ve already won, the possible scholarship money that I%26#039;ve just applied for, FAFSA, and what I have saved up I couldn%26#039;t in my entire lifetime afford Penn State%26#039;s projected out of state tuition for four years.

Thank you for your time and suggestions!|||You can%26#039;t and there is only one reason!

Even though you can change all the things you listed, you graduated from High School in Florida. Your transcript will say you graduated in Florida, and they will notice!|||You can%26#039;t.

You have already established yourself as a student wishing to move there for the sole purpose of going to college. This means you will always be deemed an out of state resident of this school. You COULD change your drivers licence, get a voter ID card and even file your taxes in PA, and you%26#039;d STILL be an out of state resident. People will tell you all kinds of things to tell you how to get around this and they never follow up with it to tell you they eventually fail at it.

No, having your Aunt list you as a dependent on her taxes or giving the school her address won%26#039;t change your residency status. Again, you are not from PA and you can%26#039;t count time enrolled in college towards the residency requirement anyway.

Usually what ends up happening (i%26#039;ve seen it, trust me) is the kids get to be Jrs or Seniors in college and just end up successfully (by changing the Drivers lic and stuff) making sure their OLD state (Flordia) won%26#039;t count them as an in-state student either.... when they try to tranfer back because Mom and Dad can%26#039;t borrow that much money anymore.

Its quite a shock to see the look on their face when they realize all those years of trying to get OUT of paying the extra backfires on them and costs them even more money, by trying to attend in their home state.

If you read through the questions on the FAQ%26#039;s you%26#039;ll notice that it says that a student must be classified as %26quot;independent%26quot; under the federal finanical aid guidelines. This means that unless you are over 24 years old, you will not be able to be independent because this is the age the fin aid office uses to determine if you are independent (has nothing to do with your parents claiming you on thier tax forms).

Here are the links where I got my info. Email me if you have questions.|||you have to have lived in pennsylvania for more then a year in order to do this so you would have already had to done this|||Once you receive the designation as %26quot;out of state%26quot; student that is what your residency is until you can prove that your are living in that state for reasons other than attending college. Schools are very strict with this because in-state tuition is like a privelage for those students whose parents have lived, worked and paid taxes to the state to help support the schools. Your parents have not done that in PA, they did that in FL. You will need more scholarship money, or borrow more money if this truly is the school of your dreams.

How do I change my residency from NC to VA?

I got married two weeks ago, and now have moved to the state of Virginia. I want to change my state of residency, so that I am not filling out two states taxes, ect. I have filled out the name change forms for marriage, change of address forms, and all documents now list my state of residency and address as Virginia. What more do I need to do for the government to recognize that as my only state of residence? Thank you.|||Sounds as if you%26#039;ve done what you need to do. Why do you think you will have to fill out two states taxes? That will only happen the first year of Va. residency if you worked and paid taxes in NC. you will fill out part year residence tax forms for both thereafter it will be Va. only.|||move to Va.|||You%26#039;ll be moving back to NC when the new massive Honda plant is built. I%26#039;m 17 years Old and from NY but I%26#039;m moving from NY to VA to live with my uncle. How do I change my state residency so I don%26#039;t have trouble doing things like applying to take the GED or getting my drivers license or receiving mail?|||Move there. Go to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get a Virginia license (You%26#039;ll probably need your uncle to show he has a power of attorney from your parents to act as a guardian). You get a from at the post office to have your mail forwarded to you at your new address. When you are 18, register to vote and for selective service from Virginia.|||You move there and you live there.

WHY is this such a difficult concept to grasp?|||Move there, LIVE there, pay TAXES there, register to VOTE there.

What are the implications of a UK resident living and working in ROI?

How do I change my state residency? I claim NY but have lived in Springfield MA since 2006 on Military orders.?

I am off orders now since March of 2009 and will be living in MA while working in CT. I want to know if I should change my residency to MA so I%26#039;m not paying NY tax anymore and how does it work when you work in CT for tax purposes? Thanks|||There is a procedure in the military (for military pay) to have, or change, your %26quot;official%26quot; state of residence.

If I remember correctly, NY has a somewhat favorable treatment of military pay (they don%26#039;t count it) while MA is sometimes called Taxachusetts.

If you are not getting military pay (is that what %26quot;off orders%26quot; means) then just change your residence, get a MA drivers license, etc.

But if your going to change your official military state of residence, there are a few states that don%26#039;t collect income tax at all (Florida, Texas, Alaska, Nevada etc.)|||You change your residency by changing the address on all your identification (driver%26#039;s lisc., credit cards, etc.) and by actually living in the new place. You don%26#039;t have to actually file anything unless the old state (NY) asks you for proof of your new residence.|||You do not have to do anything formal to change your residency for tax purposes. You residence is where you live (not including temporary residences, such as those of military personnel or college students), even if you do not file any paperwork.

However, you are required by other laws (not related to income taxes) to do the following:

1) Change the address on your driver%26#039;s license

2) Transfer your car insurance, title, registration, etc.

3) Obtain new license plates for your car

After replacing the license places, you should also scrape the NY registration and inspection stickers from your windshield.

How can I change my residency from GA to NY while I am attending school in GA?

I am planning to move to NY for school. I would transfer to NYU but I do not want to pay out of state. I would attend at least two more semesters in my college here in GA. Is that anyway to become resident of NY while I%26#039;m here? like owning a property or car in NY, does it help? any other alternative way?|||No, there is no way to establish residency at a state you don%26#039;t live in.

Most schools general policy is %26quot;Once and out-of-state student always an out-of-state student%26quot; because you can%26#039;t use your time living in that state towards residency requirements.|||I would recommend familiarizing yourself with the residency requirements of your school. In my experience, it is pretty hard to establish residency while out of state. My university (ASU) required solid proof (i.e. employment history, vehicle registrations, rental history, income tax returns, etc.).
